The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

When he was growing up, virtually anything seemed possible. It was the golden age of science and adventuring, of heroes and villains. Technological advances were coming in leaps and bounds, and the future was a very exciting prospect indeed.

But kids grow up. They meet their heroes and realize they're only men. The demons they have to face turn out to have little to do with supervillainy, and more to do with paying the bills. And the next thing you know, you're living in a trailer with a hydrocephalic former child genius.

It'd be enough to make anyone become jaded, but Pete held firm to a piece of the spark that had defined his generation, even if it was for no other reason but stubbornness. He was a born loser, but an optimistic one.

Then, through various bizarre twists of fate, he found his circle of friends suddenly and drastically widened. And if life hadn't gotten better, then it had at least gotten a whole lot more interesting.
